The tune is believed to have originated in the early 18th century and was likely composed by a Scottish fiddler. It was first published in the late 18th century in the Scots Musical Museum, a collection of Scottish songs and tunes compiled by James Johnson. The title Miss Stewart of Garth refers to a woman named Anne Stewart, who was the daughter of John Stewart, the laird of Garth. The Garth estate was located in Perthshire, Scotland, and was known for its picturesque beauty and its association with the Jacobite cause.During the 18th century, the Jacobites were a political movement in Scotland that sought to restore the Stuart dynasty to the throne of Great Britain. Many Highlanders supported the Jacobite cause, and the Garth estate was known to be sympathetic to their efforts. It's possible that Miss Stewart of Garth was composed as a tribute to Anne Stewart or as a way of expressing support for the Jacobite cause. The tune has a melancholy and wistful quality that has made it a favorite among Scottish musicians and dancers for centuries.Over the years, Miss Stewart of Garth has been played in many different contexts, from traditional Highland gatherings to modern concerts and recordings. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the beauty and power of Scottish music, and it remains a beloved part of Scotland's cultural heritage to this day.

Theme and Variations-Accompaniment Track, Dan CutchenTime: approximately 6:00And Can It Be That I Should Gain? is a Christian hymn written by Charles Wesley. And Can It Be was written in 1738 to celebrate Wesley's conversion, which he regarded as having taken place on May 21 of that year. This beautiful hymn has been popular and enduring. And Can It Be That I Should Gain is perhaps one of the most joyfully poignant hymns penned by Charles Wesley (1707-1788). On Whitsunday (Pentecost), May 21, 1738, three days before his brother John experienced his heart strangely warmed,’ Charles was convalescing in the home of John Bray, a poor mechanic, when he heard a voice saying, In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, arise, and believe, and thou shalt be healed of all thy infirmities. The voice was most likely Mr. Bray’s sister who felt commanded to say these words in a dream.Anglican hymn writer Timothy Dudley-Smith, notes that the following then happened:Charles got out of bed and opening his Bible read from the Psalms: He have put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God, followed by the first verse of Isaiah 40, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. He wrote in his journal, I have found myself at peace with God, and rejoiced in the hope of love Christ (Dudley-Smith, 1987, 1).The statement from Mr. Bray’s sister sparked within Charles a conviction like he had never felt before. Moved and convicted in spirit, Charles wrestled with these words until he came to rest in his faith, knowing that it is by faith we are saved (Ephesians 2:8).Soon after this conversion experience, he wrote two hymns in celebration of the amazing love he had come to know: And Can It Be that I Should Gain and Where Shall My Wondering Soul Begin? (United Methodist Hymnal, 342)There has been some debate as to which hymn was written first, but most current scholarship accepts the latter as the first hymn written by Charles after his conversion experience. No matter its place in the chronology of Wesley's output, And Can It Be has been and remains one of his most remarkable hymns, expressing like no other the rapturous joy of receiving salvation. And Can It Be That I Should Gain. The Hebrides Overture (Fingal's Cave) for woodwind ensemble
Small Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956662 Composed by Felix Bartho…
(+)
Small Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956662 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 127 pages. C Melville-Mason #6735335. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956662). This is an arrangement of Mendelssohn’s overture The Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave), intended for a medium-sized woodwind group of perhaps 20 – 30 players. It has been categorised as ‘advanced’, as the length and tempo of the work make it quite challenging. However, provided the main parts are covered by competent players, those with less experience can either double, judiciously omitting any problem sections, or opt for the appropriate ‘easier’ add-on part. This is great fun to attempt, even if your ensemble may not manage it up to performance standard! The piece is scored for the following instrumentation: Essential Parts: Part 1: Flute Part 2: Flute Part 3: Oboe Part 4: Clarinet in B-flat Part 5: Clarinet in B-flat (contains essential divisi, so minimum of 2 players essential) Part 6: Clarinet in B-flat Part 7: Clarinet in B-flat OR Part 7: Alto Saxophone Part 8: Alto Saxophone Part 9: Alto Saxophone Part 10: Bassoon OR Part 10: Bass Clarinet in B-flat (low C instrument essential) Optional add-ons: Easier Flute/Oboe Low Clarinet in B-flat Easier Alto Saxophone Easier Tenor Saxophone Mini-Bassoon in F (an extra, NOT an easy, part) Easier Bassoon Mendelssohn visited Scotland in 1829 and, after a tour of the Highlands, travelled by steamer from Fort William to Oban and thence to the Hebridean island of Mull. From there, he made the short boat trip to the small island of Staffa, to visit Fingal’s Cave – a sea cave formed of hexagonal basalt columns, with a highly intriguing natural acoustic. The Hebrides overture was inspired by this segment of Mendelssohn’s Scottish travels. The work is an early example of a tone poem: a musical representation of the scenery, wind and weather of the Scottish Hebridean islands, reflecting their sudden and infinite changeability. After some revisions, the overture received its first performance in May 1832 and remains a favourite with audiences to this day. It has been central in establishing – and sustaining – the popularity of Fingal’s Cave as a tourist destination. This arrangement was originally created for a woodwind course held on another Scottish island – Skye, which is the largest and most northerly of the Inner Hebrides.

Duration: 1:53 Score 6 pg. 54 ms. Alto Sax 1 pg. Piano part 3 pg. One of Schubert's most well-known pieces. This is an effective recital encore due to its brevity and range of expression. Could work well for a variety of occasions: wedding receptions, church services (Easter), and anniversaries. It seems like a pleasant dance, unlike some previous dance music. Schubert improvised these dances at parties for his friends.  Although conceived on-the-fly, these dances are the work of a genius. Composers have similarly elevated dance music to artistic status. As a result, they freed it from the original purpose of dancing. Certainly, the older masters used the dance forms as vehicles for complex treatments. Here, however, Schubert retains the dance-like quality while finally expressing his innermost thoughts and emotions. The dance is certainly filled with a doleful expression, yet the texture remains even more light and refined. Therefore, to perform these with sensitivity we probably need to use a light but accurate touch. The accompaniment pattern needs to be crisp and delicate – probably even in the more forceful parts. The piano pedal should also be used very carefully so as a result not to blur the outline. Instead, it should contribute to the dynamic quality of the piece. Schubert Franz Schubert (1797–1828) was, in fact, a famous Austrian composer. Moreover, he composed during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. Schubert was comparatively prolific. He wrote more than 600 secular vocal works, seven symphonies, and, correspondingly, a massive amount of piano and chamber music. Critics agree, as a matter of fact, that his most famous works include his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 (also known as the Trout Quintet), the Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D. 759 (Unfinished Symphony), the last sonatas for piano (D. 958–960), and the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin (D. 795) and Winterreise (D. 911). Education Schubert was furthermore a musical child prodigy. He studied violin with his father as well as piano with his older brother. In addition, when Schubert was eleven he studied at Stadtkonvikt school, where he became familiar with the orchestral music of Haydn, Mozart, and likewise Beethoven. In due time he left school and returned home where he studied to become an educator; nevertheless, he continued studying composition with Antonio Salieri. Performance Eventually, Schubert was admitted to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde as a performer. This appointment straightaway established his name in Vienna as a composer and pianist. Finally, he gave his only composition recital in 1828. He died suddenly a few months later probably due to typhoid fever. Legacy Schubert’s music was by and large underappreciated while he was alive. There were all in all only a few enthusiasts in Vienna. After he died, however, interest in his work in fact increased. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, and other famous composers in due time discovered his compositions. Nowadays, historians rank Schubert expressly among the greatest composers of the era, and his music remains in general very popular.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.926665 Composed by Michael A. Morizio. A Cappella,Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 13 pages. M.A. Morizio #3588435. Published by M.A. Morizio (A0.926665). In the first chapter of Paul’s second letter to Timothy, verses 1-10, we observe the intimate relationship that exists, between a spiritual father and his son… I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. In Chapter two we also witness Paul’s commissioning Timothy to entrust to faithful men all that he was taught by the Apostle, that they then may be able to teach others in the same way also. While the elder Paul is now in prison and bound in chains, he is nonetheless empowered by the Holy Spirit to encourage and exhort Timothy to share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ, for the sake of the Gospel. Though Paul is bound in chains, he declares to Timothy the word of God is not bound! Endurance for Paul serves only one purpose, the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. In verse 11, Paul supports his statements by inserting another known 1st century Hymn to Christ, which brings us to our fifth anthem, For If We Died with Him. The text-or lyrics-of this hymn are even bracketed (or indented) in the NKJV Bible, suggesting the hymnic setting. The proposition of the text is quite clear; if we died with Christ, then we shall also live eternally with Christ. If we endure in the faith, then we shall also reign eternally with Christ. However, there is an insertion of 'Law' here, with a dire warning that the opposite is also true: If we deny Christ, resist, and refuse His beckoning and free invitation to salvation, then He will also deny us. Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven… I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:31-23). Thus, the stage has been set for the fifth anthem. The piece is composed for SATB a cappella. The key is F Major. The opening phrase, This is a trustworthy saying, is in ¾ time, where a series of triplets are sung three times each (the Trinitarian opening motif). The meter then shifts to 2/4 with a lovely, distinctive unison melody for the opening phrase, For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. Soon after, when the lyrics shift to the words, If we deny Him, He will also deny us, the song drops into the relative minor key (F minor). The melody in this passage is haunting, and sends a clear warning signal to the listener to pay heed to what is being sung. When the text then transitions from if we are faithless, He remains faithful, however, the key shifts back to F Major in a new (dance-like) rhythm for the final verse, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. A coda is inserted in the final phrase where the triplet pattern is recapitulated (This is a trustworthy saying) and the sopranos ascend to a high F singing the lyrics, we shall live, for He remains faithful! to triumphantly end the piece.

Chamber Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.876665 Composed by Dosia McKay. 20th Century,Contemporary,Renaissance. Score and parts. 81 pages. Gavia Music #57229. Published by Gavia Music (A0.876665). Three Laments of Heloise were inspired by the Letters of Abelard and Heloise, especially the character of Heloise, her crushing loss, self-denial, sacrifice, and forced conformity to the standards of medieval society. The first movement entitled Queens Envied Me My Joys is Heloise’s recollection of early days with Abelard. Every wife, every young girl desired you in absence and was on fire in your presence, writes Heloise. The pleasures of lovers which we shared have been too sweet… They are always there before my eyes, bringing with them awakened longings… The second movement If Not With You, My Heart Is Nowhere, expresses Heloise’s sense of abandonment by her lover. She writes to him: My heart was not in me but with you, and now, even more, if it is not with you it is nowhere; truly, without you I cannot exist. The third movement, My Most Wretched Soul, gives voice to Heloise’s continued struggle with her loss and the reality of the convent life. She does not see herself as a servant of God, but rather a hypocrite who remains pious on the outside and rages inwardly. Of all wretched women I am the most wretched, and amongst the unhappy I am unhappiest. How can it be called repentance for sins, however great the mortification of the flesh, if the mind still retains the will to sin and is on fire with its old desires? Modal scales and dance sequences give the Laments a Renaissance feel. Music theory students might appreciate the fact that the unifying element of the three movements is the interval of the 7th which appears very frequently in melodic and harmonic gestures and creates a feeling of ambiguity and of a lack of resolution. For chamber orchestra: Flute (or Piccolo), Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Strings (Quintet, or 4,4,3,2,1, or larger), 2 Percussion: Frame Drum, Tambourine. Total duration 8:00. Possible transcriptions for period Renaissance instruments - please contact the composer. Composed in 2009. Copyright 2009 Dosia McKay / Gavia Music (ASCAP).

Schubert seems to have composed this piece as a song-setting. This is because he wanted to portray a poignant emotional event from a poem. The poem was Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake. Consequently, this song became an integral part of Schubert's Song cycle. Therefore the cycle is called: the Lady of the Lake. In the poem, Ellen Douglas is the Lady of the Lake. The lake is probably Loch Katrine in the Scottish Highlands. First of all, Ellen goes with her father to stay in the Goblin's cave. They go because he earlier refused to join in a rebellion against King James. Roderick Dhu, the chief of the rebellious Alpine Clan, marches up the mountain with his army. But before the battle, he, first of all, hears Ellen singing. She is singing a prayer calling for help from the Virgin Mary. Schubert's piece was first performed at the castle of Countess Sophie Weissenwolff in Steyregg, Austria.  Schubert dedicated the arrangement to her, and as a result, she became famous as the lady of the lake. The incipit of Ellen's song is Ave Maria which is Latin for Hail Mary. It seems like this similarity led Schubert to adapt the melody to accommodate the Roman Catholic prayer Ave Maria. Consequently, the Latin version of Ave Maria finally became more famous than the original so that consequently many believe he wrote the Latin version first. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and other famous composers in due time discovered his compositions. Nowadays, historians rank Schubert expressly among the greatest composers of the era, and his music remains in general very popular.
